Of tears and supportive fans

Tears welled up in 15-year-old Chi Ying Yu’s eyes moments after the final preliminary auditions for Channel U’s second season of Campus Superstar began.
There was a problem with the CD that the Deyi Secondary School student had submitted which contained the song she was to sing for this round.
But fans from her school rallied behind her and she was touched by their efforts.
“When you stand on the stage and sing and see friends cheering for you, it gives this feeling that makes me want to move on”, the secondary one student said.
While a technical problem hindered Ying Yu, Bukit Merah Secondary School student Mary Ang Poh San was unwell the night before.
The 16-year-old student was supposed to attend a prize giving ceremony in school earlier but did not show up due to a bout of fever and a sore throat.
“I felt like giving up but my friends called me up motivating me to come for the competition,” she said.
Mary’s fans also cheered her up with a little surprise. The group of students wrote wishes and words of support and encouragement on colourful helium-filled balloons that were recycled from a school event earlier. It was done to give her moral support.
When asked about the efforts by her supporters, she said: “Ifelt touched and didn’t expect them to be so sweet. I’m happy to have them as my friends.”
Although both Ying Yu and Mary did not qualify a place theTop 10 category for females, the bonds forged with their supporters becamestronger.
Whether it was mother, auntie or friend at the Toa Payoh HDB Hub supporters also play an important role.
Seeing the sea of supporters in school uniform holding placards and shouting away with their powerful lungs, one would have thought itwas a school assembly gone wrong on a Saturday afternoon. But it’s all in the name of fun and for Campus Superstar.
And whoever who wants to win this competition is surely going to need your support as well.
