Post-it@Youth.SG Round 1 Winners!

*Drumrolls*. The results are out! The first round of Post-it@Youth.SG is over… and the winner, as voted by YOU and our powerful judging panel of Chris Yap, Shan and Aun Koh is…

Rayvolvez!

Grim toilets, murder, nudity… art is expression, this blogger argues as she takes us on a journey to toe the dark underbelly of art.

Congratulations, Elaine! You are now the proud owner of a Samsung K3 2GB MP3 Player. Here are what the judges said:

CHRIS YAP: “Can definitely go further with the comments on art, or the choice of materials / works. Eg. How is it personally connected to her? In this time and age, things have become too direct. She’s a product of this generation. It will be good to learn to be obvious, yet subtle at the same time. Too much shock is just as boring as too sedated. All in all, I love her passion, creativity and effort! Keep it up!”

SHAN: “rayvolvez scores points for effort in showcasing some of her own content and having production values. She may want to look into copyright, for taking Csaba Moldovan’s image…? And she seems to know how influential a certain 1917 toilet urinal (google ‘Duchamp’) has been in changing modern definitions of art. By talking about other artists’ works, she shares her own knowledge, and it’s this kind of thing that widens the appreciation of art.”

AUN KOH: “Elaine has actually produced and pointed to some interesting works while making a good point about the nature of subjectivity in deciding what is and is not art.”

The three lucky voters who have won for themselves an exclusive Singapore Art Show tote bag are:

Seah May Lin Jean
Serene Phua
Tang Jet Yang Daniel

Watch out for the details in your email, y’all!

So, what did the judges say about the other Post-it bloggers of Round 1?

********

B1: Crazy Hamster

Art is animation. Animation is art. The animated Crazy Hamster insists all great animation are funny and shares an art project.
GO TO BLOG

CHRIS YAP: “My fav in terms of the web design. Someone who not only talks, but does it as well! But comments are not in-depth enough. Just barely touching the surface. Making sweeping statements like ‘have you seen a really sad and sombre animation succeed? I do not think so.’ just shows how inexperienced the blogger is. Should substantiate. Success = money? No money = no success? Good topic to talk about, especially in art.’

SHAN: “Crazyhamster is learning subtle self-promotion at a young age (which isn’t a bad thing for getting ahead)! His case for animation is a reminder that commercial work can also be artful. His class project animation reminds me a little of the Teeny Little Superguy - the cool stop animation feature on Sesame Street. I was amused but also bewildered while watching it. crazyhamster should continue to develop and evolve, in his writing and thoughts, and entertain us more in future.”

AUN KOH: “I really don’t like it when people can’t write properly. I’ve deducted points for the number of typos here. Further, the point the author is making is, while interest(ing), neither illuminating nor controversial. I don’t think anyone would argue his or her point.”

B2: Thengz

He says he doesn’t want to be preachy. He also says a Great Ball of Metal in New York is doing a Mother Earth and screaming: “I love Al Gore!”
GO TO BLOG

CHRIS YAP: “So it’s art because it represents green? Sounds like “trying just to get on postitatyouthdotsg”. That metal ball IS art, You just need to go deeper into why it is, not just make statements that it is and not substantiate it. What I like is that I can actually feel a real person behind this blog. Unlike some which is just trying to be someone else. The music is a nice touch.”

SHAN: “thengz’s intentionally silly humour has some hits and some misses, - eg.’reproduce!’ - and so for me his greatest success is in referring to the metallic ball in front of the UN building as a good piece of public art, in terms of its monumental presence and openness to interpretation, across time. Yes, it’s a big ball that ’speaks volume’…!”

AUN KOH: “Nice piece of art pictured on the post. The rest is kind of a waste of space. Nothing really said here.”

B3: Kuanyi

The blogger born in the year of the Tiger gets stalked by a man-operated vehicle, then credits art for giving him inspiration, guts and a curious urge to throttle a turtle.
GO TO BLOG

CHRIS YAP: “Very personal webpage. Tries hard to talk to an audience. Like the insights like perspectives, as well as what he thinks is great art. But again, need to quantify that ‘CUTE’ art is great art.”

SHAN: “Did anyone get the zooming wheelchair, or is it just me? kuanyikun seems to have had a little fun with his post! He is best and strongest when being clear and candid about what he feels, eg. his sentiments about art and the everyday, why he feels the cute illustration of the hare & tortoise fable, and Spiderman comics are good art. Finally, he left us with a big cheese, perhaps a comment that food is also art…?”

AUN KOH: “Tries to make a statement and not bad examples but art isn’t just comic books and pop culture icons.”

********

B4: Mai Siow Siow
The bear-lover sees art in, well, a cute bear cub perched up on a human.
GO TO BLOG

CHRIS YAP: “Not enough effort. Just seems to ramble rather than get to the geist of what he’s talking about. Don’t seem to have an inking for visual art, but seems to be really passionate about music!”

SHAN: “animal-lover ngshuhann scores points for roping her colleagues in to talk about art by showing them the interesting image of the bear across the man’s shoulder. She actively tests her theory that art generates emotion, as well as provokes diverse responses - definitely something that art does. She makes the post interesting by offering a general definition of art and her personal opinion. A neat, little post packs more punch!”

AUN KOH: “Yech. Again, a waste of space.”
