Western Australia’s Finest

Singaporeans have always loved going to Australia, be it to study or for holiday, and for a change Australia is coming to us.

Until Oct 31, Bedrock Bar & Grill (together with the Australian Trade Commission, Tourism Western Australia and Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia) is offering a showcase of Western Australia as a tourist destination - food, wine and scenery.

We were invited on Fri to a media preview of the Western Australia Wine Bazaar which ran until Sun.

Featuring nine wine booths with wine from the Margaret River and Swan Valley regions of Western Australia, it was a smorgasbord of fine Australian red and white wines and I was simply overcome with choice.

A disclaimer before I continue: I am neither a wine connoisseur nor an alcoholic. (And yes I’m over 18)

Having said that though, the really good thing about being at a wine bazaar is the vendors are ever willing to let you sample their ware in varying amounts, which made my mouth get pretty numb with all the wine I was having. Not bad wine I might add.

More importantly, the whole event made me feel my inadquacy when it comes to wine and its characters. While people can talk about tastes of fruit, smokiness, dryness and fullness of each wine, I can only say whether or not I like it (and most of the time I do). Would that be an excuse to drink more?

For those who want to experience other bits of Western Australia’s offering, there will be a wine dinner on Oct 29, and a culinary master class on Oct 31. Beware though, these don’t come cheap at $150++ and $70 per person respectively.

At the end of the day, I think it’s significantly more worth it to actually fly down to Western Australia for a holiday, but if you’d like to have a taste of it without leaving Singapore, do catch some of the things happening this month.
