Under Pressure
I was reminded on my way to work, when I saw this Audi R8 lined up behind the traffic light about how the journey of getting my drivers’ license was. The most memorable of the countless sessions spend at Comfort DelGro Driving centre was my first driving test which I failed.
It was epic to say the very least. I found myself walking out of the driving centre feeling very low about myself and well… it felt like a giant middle finger was being pointed at myself. I panicked during the test, not only did I receive a whopping 39 points (it takes about 18 to pass) I basically put myself as well as some twenty other road-users in danger. I might be exaggerating but like I said before, it was epic.
My kryptonite in this case was panic, it was my first time taking the driving test and without much composure or at least some ‘made-up’ composure, I tried bluffing my way through. (the Police Officers testing you actually take note of your body language and reactions during the test)

In the end, I committed too many mistakes, made a fool of myself and squandered some $300 just because I lost my composure. I would like to go on about how this trial led me into a state of denial then a series of delinquencies which made me wrong a nice elder person who eventually showed me the way and turned me back onto my path. Finally turning me into a better person. But really, it only is a driving test.
Alesha Dixon’s ‘Breathe Slow’ taught me a life lesson, it has always been so obvious yet nobody notices such details. ‘Can’t forget to breathe slow, count from one-to-ten, with my eyes closed.’ To calm oneself down means a world of difference. Where you think clearer, logically and you are less likely to regret your decisions later on.
It is the new year. Today marking the very end of 2009, you will be partying, enjoying yourself, peer-pressure will set in, you just need to breathe.
